Mind Health Yoga was originally designed to help individuals with severe mental illness since I have worked with this population as a Patients Rights Advocate in acute inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospitals and residential living facilities monitored by a County Department of Mental Health where I was employed. This work involved legal representation, community based organizing and education, and a human rights and dignity orientation. I bring the dedication and passionate attachment I had to my former clients into my current role as a yoga and meditation teacher.
Mind Health Yoga has since become a place for individuals with all types of mental and physical health conditions. Focusing on people with no experience of yoga and meditation to those who are middle aged or elderly and tend to have physical limitations. Mind Health Yoga serves to help alleviate the emotional stress and trauma that individuals experience, as well as the physical pain that people encounter as a result of injuries or the aging process.
The tools I use and focus on are body awareness and breathing practices. Of course I use yoga postures, but body awareness and one's ability to know how to breath are key to healing. The physical postures are only as good as one is able to fully experience and be aware of them. Breathing is essential to ease into and out of the yoga postures. Body awareness, breathing and movement unite to mend the ailments of the mind and body.
In addition to body awareness, breathing practices and physical postures I also utilize mindfulness and special mantra meditations for further cognitive control and peace of mind. These meditations are scientifically proven to improve mood and enhance memory based on medical studies and brain scans in university laboratories.
I am trained to teach both groups in classroom environments and individuals in specialized sessions. Since Covid I have been teaching and seeing people on Zoom.
I particularly enjoy working with individuals in YOGA WELLNESS SESSIONS where I am able to get to know the individuals and more details about how to work with their specific conditions and go deeper with the yoga and meditation practices. I am able to set up individual plans for a variety of mental and physical conditions and counsel people on how best to approach their health conditions.
